During his time as Governor-General, Sir William Deane established himself as the conscience of the nation. Even those who may not have agreed with his views acknowledged that he did his job with both style and dignity, and was a credit to the office and the nation. He spoke on issues as varied as relations with Aboriginal Australians, the social obligations of companies (especially big business); social justice, our obligations to those who have slipped through the cracks in society, the role of the law and the duties of government. He was there at the many of the significant events of the 20th and early 21st century - from the Port Arthur memorial service to the Olympic Games and the memorial service for Sir Donald Bradman.
