Some people's view of creativity may be one of positive health, but when looked at further, the picture goes on to become more complex. There are also issues of illness, pain, trauma, substance abuse, and thought disorders and creativity. The authors do not minimize the importance of specialized and exceptional productions in the arts and sciences, but examine such contributions, and their mystery, along with some of their costs. But they also look to creativity as a general style of thinking and living.
.,."unique and impressive anthology (the editors) are themselves highly visible names.... The present 'state of the art' in thinking and research on creativity is indeed well represented..., large concluding chapters by Richards...nicely summarizes the main lines of theory and empirical findings.... For long the psychology of creativity has mainly been a branch of literary psychology.... The present volume has...a much higher concentration of empirical 'hard science' than is typical...main thesis recieves strong empirical support in the solid studies by Andreasen, Jamison, Ludwig, and Richards et. al...a 'must' for instructors and others with a serious scientific interest in this currently burgeoning subject."-Personality and Individual Differences
"For its breadth and synthesis of divergent approaches, it is commendable and exemplifies the very creativity it celebrates...[b]ecause of the broad spectrum of studies brought together in this one volume, it is an excellent reference book."-American Journal of Psychiatry
