Paul Valent, retired medical doctor, psychiatrist, psychotherapist and traumatologist, describes the struggles and discoveries in his varied four-decade career. Each chapter offers a glimpse into the psychotherapeutic encounter, from the author's field work with survivors of the Ash Wednesday bushfires, to the private challenges of unearthing childhood trauma in a sex offender. Through the fascinating stories of his work with patients and the examination of his own life story as a Holocaust survivor, Valent articulates and grapples with ubiquitous human issues such as morality, trauma, illness and death.
Paul Valent is a former doctor and psychiatrist whose own survival of the Holocaust in Hungary informed his work with trauma and disaster survivors. He is the cofounder and former president of the Australasian Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and a former executive on the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. He is the author of "Child Survivors: Adults Living with Childhood Traumas, From Survival to Fulfillment: A Framework for the Life-Trauma Dialectic, "and "Trauma and Fulfillment Therapy: A Wholist Framework."
