The theoretical and practical basis of psychoanalysis as described by Freud lies in the interpretation - a statement to the patient that places his or her behaviour or words in a different context. This text discusses the importance of the relationship between patient and therapist, and puts forward the merits of a more honest and personal engagement. This edition contains rewritten material and while the general tenor and message remain, the author has in places revised his argument.
