James W. Messerschmidt is Distinguished University Professor of sociology and chair of the criminology department at the University of Southern Maine, where he also teaches in the womens and gender studies program. He is the author of a number of books, most recently Hegemonic Masculinity: Formulation, Reformulation, and Amplification.
