This book brings together theoretical discussions of thaws - phases of liberalization in East European societies - with studies focused on literature, theatre and the visual arts. In addition to the analysis of developments in selected regions (the USSR and its republics, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Yugoslavia) the book also looks at the historical dimension through discussions of the alternation of liberalization and repression in authoritarian European states from the 18th century onwards.
Marko Pavlyshan is Lecturer in the Department of Slavonic Languages at Monash University.
