First published in 1996, Mohi Turei: na tuhinga i roto i te reo Mori is the collected writings in te reo Mori of Mohi Turei (circa 18301914), Ngti Porou leader, scholar and Anglican minister. Mohi Turei is thought to have been born about 1830 and was brought up at Te Kautuku near Rangitukia in the Waiapu district. During the conflicts on the East Coast of the North Island in the 1860s and in the following decades, he became a tribal leader, especially in the Waiapu district, where he lived almost all his life. Turei was celebrated as a composer of haka, as an orator, as a writer and a notable carver. He was consulted by Samuel Williams and Elsdon Best on Mori traditions and language. This new edition of Mohi Turei: na tuhinga i roto i te reo Mori is one of four new editions of essential reo Mori texts released in 2024 by Te Herenga Waka University Press, in collaboration with Te Takarangi, a national programme celebrating mtauranga Mori through Mori-authored works of non-fiction.
