Translated by Chris Brandt Now available in paperback, Clara Nieto's history of US policy toward Latin America is enriched by her extensive first-hand experience: As a member of the Colombian diplomatic corps, she was present at UN and OAS meetings where US-Cuba conflicts were addressed, and where negotiations between the US and Latin America were hammered into place. She demonstrates convincingly that US policy toward Latin America has been a politics of intervention set into motion by the triumph of the Cuban revolution.
"An important and valuable contribution that helps us understand the links and the vicissitudes between the United States and Latin America." - Juan Tokatlian; "Properly read, this book is a convincing incitement to rebel." - Raul Roa Kouri
Clara Nieto served in the Colombian mission to the United Nations from 1960-67; was head of the Colombian Delegation at UNESCO from 1967-70; was Colombian Charge d'Affairs in Yugoslavia until 1976; served as Colombian Ambassador to Cuba from 1977-80; and from 1984-86 was Director of UNESCO's regional office for Latin America and the Caribbean. Her writing has appeared in many newspapers, including El Tiempo, El Espectador, El Mundo and NACLA. Chris Brandt, a writer, translator and teacher, has seen his work appear in such anthologies as Appearances, Crimes of the Beats and Mr. Knife Miss Fork, as well as in The New Yorker.
