A 200-page compilation of print materials by and about Afro-Americans in the humanities over the past two or three centuries. The author, a black library administrator and historian, has chosen citations from bibliographies, indexes, union lists, encyclopedias, biographical dictionaries, library catalogs, textbooks, journal articles, dissertations, and general works. The book is arranged by subject chapters with format subdivisions; there are subject and author-title indexes. Humanities' is broadly defined; in addition of the expected chapters on music and art, there are, for example, sections on linguistics, librarianship, and cultural and intellectual history. For each chapter, criteria for selection are given, and suggestions for further research are presented.... This book is written from the point of view of an Afro-American, adding to its overall usefulness. College, university and public libraries.-Choice
