The author, a black library administrator and historian, has chosen citations from bibliographies, indexes, union lists, encyclopedias, biographical dictionaries, library catalogs, textbooks, journal articles, dissertations, and general works. The book is arranged by subject chapters with format subdivisions; there are subject and author-title indexes.
