The Civil War displayed how deeply divided the country was over slavery. But its beginnings can be traced to a band of abolitionists and Quakers, freed and enslaved blacks who all joined forces to create what would come to be known as the Underground Railroad, a movement that occupies a romantic place in the nations imagination but about which little is actually known.
Beginning six decades before the Civil War, freedom seeking blacks and pious whites worked together to save tens of thousands of lives. Not since the American Revolution had the country engaged in an act of such profound civil disobedience that not only subverted federal law but also went against prevailing mores. Indeed, it was the Underground Railroadnot the Civil Rights movementthat was the countrys first racially integrated political movement.
Fergus Bordewich has written an epic of high drama, moral courage, religious fanaticism, and unexpected personal transformations played out by a cast of extraordinary heroes and heroines. Its a quintessential yet hitherto little explored component of early American history, one no one concerned with our future can afford to miss.
