Description

In contemporary European societies the question of racism, linked to the politicisation of migration, is a major issue in social and political debate. Developments in a number of European societies have highlighted the volatility of this phenomenon and the ease with which racist and extreme-right political movements can mobilise around the question of immigration and opposition to cultural pluralism. The situation in countries as divergent as the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and various Scandinavian societies shows evidence of mounting racism and hostility to migrants. This volume provides a critical overview of the processes that have led to the present situation and explores some of the options for the future.

Reviews

'Compelling, theoretically sound, empirically well documented and very complete ... one of the most useful contributions to the European debate on racism and migration of recent years. It would be a serious shortcoming for anyone interested in these issues to ignore it.' Dr Marco Martiniello, Laboratoire d'Etudes des Migrations, Universite de Liege 'This is a thought provoking and timely book with some excellent contributors.' New Community '... represents one of the best English-language introductions to race in Europe' Patterns of Prejudice '...presents a wide, overarching, highly informative and well organised overview of critical appraisal of the most important issues and debates connected to migration and racism in Western Europe...Compelling, theoretically sound, empirically well documented are the main qualities of this brilliant collection of essays edited by two of the contemporary leading British scholars in the field...undoubtedly one of the most useful contributions to the European debate on racism and migration of recent years. It would be a serious shortcoming for anyone interested in these issues to ignore it.' International Migration Review 'It is an outstanding volume taht will be a valuable asset to Canadian specialists in Racism and Migration. [...] Finally, this excellent collection of articles gives us the opportunity to analzye the role and status of racial minorities in societies with historical backgrounds totally different from Canada's.'
