This book is an essential read and incredibly timely in the moment of renewed resurgence of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. It reflects years of organizing and work and is an important contribution to the rebellions of today.
, and elsewhere.
Kimberl Crenshaw is one of the most prominent contemporary Black feminist theorists and her work on intersectionality and Critical Race Theory are foundational to political discourse in academia and movement spaces.
She is a prominent speaker and gives lectures and seminars all over the world and her input is sought in many projects, including being part of drafting the equality clause for the South African Constitution.
In addition to Crenshaws work this book builds on a new campaign, #SayHerName, launched in December 2014 by the African American Policy Forum (AAPF) and Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies (CISPS).
The #SayHerName campaign brings awareness to the often invisible names and stories of Black women and girls who have been victimized by racist police violence, and provides support to their families and has garnered wide support across the country.
There have been many media hits about the campaign featuring Crenshaw and other organizers and this book is the first full length collection of pieces about the work of the movement since 2014.
Kerry Washington supports the campaign and recently went on Jimmy Kimmel to talk about #SayHerName to a national audience. There has been Congressional testimony on the campaign and since its launch the campaign has raised awareness about the murder of Black women by the police, including but not limited to Alberta Spruill, Rekia Boyd, Shantel Davis, Shelly Frey, Kayla Moore, Kyam Livingston, Miriam Carey, Michelle Cusseaux, Tanisha Anderson, and Breonna Taylor.
Kimberl Crenshaw is a national treasure. Kerry Washington
