Description

  • LEADING INSTITUTION IN OCEANIC STUDIES: The Museum of Anthropology (MOA) at UBC is the only Canadian museum with established ongoing relationships with cultural centres, museums, community leaders and artists throughout the Pacific.

  • COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS: Objects with recorded stories and journeys have been selected in consultation with Indigenous scholars working in museums and cultural centres across the Pacific, with knowledge holders and artists in source communities, and with members of diaspora (Pacific Islanders living away from their homeland). Foreword by Ralph Regenvanu, the Vanuatuan Minister of Environment.

  • TELLS THE STORY OF THE FOUNDING COLLECTION AT MOA: While many locals and tourists associate MOA with its Pacific Northwest collections, MOA was founded on an Oceanic collection acquired by adventurer Frank Burnett, who donated the collection to UBC in 1927. Today, MOA's Oceania collection contains roughly 3,500 objects.

  • RENEWED ATTENTION AROUND MOA REOPENING & 75TH ANNIVERSARY: The Museum of Anthropology recently reopened to the public after a major seismic upgrades to Arthur Erickson's original architectural design closed the galleries in 2023. The reopening has drawn media attention and strong visitor attendance. 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the opening of the museum, and this will be the first MOA publication since the reopening.
