Description

A collection of short stories written by the women writers of the last century. Their stories deal with the everyday problems of Scandinavian women including women's dependency on her husband, hypocrisy of the church, the women's suffrage movement, career and family, marriage problems, unwed motherhood and divorce. Each chapter includes a biographical introduction about the author followed by a translation of the author's story or excerpt from a larger work. A short note about each translator is included at the end of the book. This book is appropriate for courses in Women Studies, Women Writers and Scandinavian Literature.

Reviews

This is a collection of 23 translated short stories, extracts from novels and diary extracts all written by Scandinavian women writers. The period covered is from the 1880s to the 1980s. The ordering of these pieces may be said to parallel the histories of women in these countries. Early extracts deal with the constraints of marriage and motherhood. The suffrage movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries has an impact and the pieces show an increasing awareness of social, economic and political issues. Similarly, we have clear evidence of the influence of the feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s giving rise to an increasing range of concerns and styles. Generally, the collection may be said to illustrate4 both the gains achieved by Scandinavian women during this period as well as the problems and obstacles that remain.-Studies on Women Abstracts
