Description

This work contains a compilation of and guide to demographic, economic, social and health statistics on women in the United States. The handbook contains more than 400 tables and charts. By providing one-stop access to the numerous statistics generated by government agencies, it is designed to save users hours of primary research. Users are provided with a single resource for the status of women, access to historical and current data and a direct source for ordering data. Demographic data includes births, abortions, fertility and childlessness, life expectancy, death rates and causes and population by age, sex and race. Social characteristics cover marriage and divorce, living arrangements and households, voting and political involvement and women as criminal offenders and victims.

Reviews

A major compilation of statistics on women's demographics, employment, health, education, and social trends.-AAUW Outlook
Here's a resource for arming yourself in any kind of statistical warfare - whether you want to bolster a theoretical argument in a women's studies thesis, win a barroom bet, or decipher the news and numbers that come pouring out of the tube.-The Women's Source
I've never met Cynthia Taeuber, but if our paths ever cross, she should be prepared for a hug. The first edition of her compilation of statistics from U.S. government sources has saved me countless hours of work trying to figure out which unit of the federal bureacracy collects the particular type of information a researcher asks about - and, of course, the actual answer to the researcher's question is often right there in the book anyway....so handy when you need just the right number to clinch an argument on a women's issue that it should be acquired by all.-Feminist Collections
Updated, reorganized, and expanded, the Statistical Handbook on Women, like its 1991 predecessor, draws on numerous government and other sources to present a statistical portrait of American women....Prominent among these are 1990 census data....a new section on reproduction has been added. The visual clarity of the presentation of the tables has been improved. The first edition has proved its value and convenience, as will this expanded second edition.-Rettig on Reference
