Description

Women's rights issues have been a part of the political and social fabric of the United States since the Declaration of Independence. In fact, women's rights activists have often wielded principles enunciated in the Declaration as they struggled to secure equality. This reference source examines 15 controversial issues concerning women's rights in the United States. A historical overview introduces each issue, followed by the presentation of primary documents that illustrate the various positions women and men have taken in support of or opposition to the issue at hand. Chapters highlight such landmark issues as the Declaration of the Rights of Women, women in the labor movement, women's suffrage, the politics of birth control and abortion, and Title IX. Each chapter concludes with an annotated list of sources to direct students in further research, making this a perfect starting point for students interested in examining the drama, impact, and constant national influence of women's issues.

Reviews

[An] obvious choice for American women's history courses.-Feminist Collections
Students and teachers of women's history, as well as those just exploring the field, will find this a superb book to use....The book runs the gamut from the antislavery movement to rape and pornography, and each chapter begins with several pages of background text setting the stage for the documents, many of which have not appeared in other anthologies. The descriptive bibliographies are extremely useful. Essential. All levels and collections.-Choice
Teens doing research for an assignment or those genuinely interested in the topic will gain a wealth of knowledge about women's struggle for equal rights, teachers will also want to use this book as a reference when teaching history or historical fiction.-VOYA
This entry in the Major Issues in American History series traces the struggle for women's rights from the early days of industrialization through such twentieth-century developments as Roe v. Wade and the passage of Title IX.-Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin
