This book presents descriptions and historical summaries of 164 nongovernmental, not-for-profit organizations aiding the promotion or performance of basic research and advancement of knowledge.'...A particularly useful feature of the articles is a brief list of additional readings on each organization. Appendixes list the organizations by type, present a chronology and genealogy, provide access by discipline or subject, and list institutional members. Many of the organizations are also contained in Gale's Encyclopedia of Associations (1981, 16th ed.) and Research Centers Directory (1982, 7th ed.), but these volumes emphasize brief current information. JOSEPH C. KIGER is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Mississippi. He is the author or editor of numerous articles and books, including Research Institutions and Learned Societies (Greenwood, 1982), Foundations (Greenwood, 1984), Historical Review of Foundation Literature (1987), and International Encyclopedia of Foundations (Greenwood, 1990).
