This study examines the relationship between Islam and modernisation in the Muslim world. Through a comparison of Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey, the author analyzes the ideas and conceptions which are inculcated and propagated in Islamic countries as Islamic religious thought, practice, orientation, tradition and ways of life. Saeed explains that existing chaos in the Muslim world is largely the result of a crisis of thought. He also argues that the grossly distorted and misunderstood Islam - as presently practised - is a major obstacle to the development of Muslim countries, but that Muslim countries can develop and progress only through Islam.
.,."This is a readable and intelligent book. I recommend it partly because it is a valuable antidote to current fundamentalist blatherings, as well as to the intellectually sterile nationalist approach that holds colonialism and imperialism responsible for everything."-MESA Bulletin

Saeed has written a comprehensive and detailed study of how Islam affects, and has historically affected, the political culture of Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey, and consequently how this culture is related to the modernization process. This excellent study adds a new dimension to the theories of development in societies with predominantly Muslim populations. Of primary interest to specialists on Islam and comparative politics. Upper-division undergraduate through graduate collections.-Choice
