Since Deng Xiaoping's economic reforms began in the early 1980s, the People's Republic of China has rejoined global politics as a world power. JAMES S. OLSON is Distinguished Professor of History and Chair of the Department of History at Sam Houston State University. He is the author of more than 25 books on U.S. and world history, including his most recent Historical Dictionary of the British Empire (Greenwood, 1996) and The Peoples of Africa: An Ethnohistorical Dictionary (Greenwood, 1996).
