When the South Sydney Rabbitohs won the NRL Premiership in 2014 they broke a drought that had lasted for more than 40 years. To their red and green army of supporters it was a day that will live in their memories for ever, yet the victory was the culmination of months of grinding hard work, passion, pain, inspiration and planning. At the centre of the campaign stood Michael Maguire, the coach.
A Year to Remember is Maguire's game by game account of the incredible 2014 season. His unique perspective will have fans reliving each hard yard, each tackle and each play in an account like no other. Rarely have followers of the game had such an opportunity to see every match - and the season as a whole - called from the coach's box. Surprising, fascinating and compelling, Maguire's inside look at the Rabbitohs' road to victory clearly demonstrates what it takes to win a premiership, and just how special an achievement it is for any team.
Michael 'Madge' Maguire is one of rugby league's most respected coaches. A former player with the Canberra Raiders, Maguire began his coaching career as assistant coach of the Melbourne Storm under Craig Bellamy. In 2009 he became head coach of English Super League club Wigan Warriors. In his first year as Wigan coach Maguire won the 2010 Super League Grand Final. A year later he won the 2011 Challenge Cup and was signed up by the South Sydney Rabbitohs, where he began coaching for the 2012 season. In 2014, Maguire took the team to their first premiership in 43 years.
