After months of hard work and anguish, and with her family constantly by her side, Bev defied the odds and walked again. But even the miracle of beating quadriplegia could not prepare her for the pain in her private life that would follow. Here she tells her story of triumph and tragedy on and off the racetrack, and of how she overcame not only a broken neck, but a broken heart. It is the inspiring true story of one woman's fierce determination and remarkable recovery.
Bev Buckingham was Australia's leading female jockey and the first woman to ride in the Caulfield Cup. In 1998 she broke her back during a race and was told she would never walk again.
Over her 10 year riding career Bev featured on TV, radio and in newspapers and in 1999 she was featured on This is your Life, honouring her achievement in defying medical advice. Bev is now training horses and lives in country Victoria with her daughter.
Murray Mottram is feature writer for the Age.
