Renowned for the high quality and finish, three generations of Woodwards from the 1840s to its sale to Purdey & Sons in 1948, ran the business. It is most famous today for its Under & Over action which continues to influence gunmakers today.

Author Dr Nick Harlow is Gunroom Manager and archivist for Purdey in London and has a special interest in the history of gunmaking. He has written for the sporting press and is author of a biography on Thomas Purdey.
