Henry Winkelmann is probably the greatest marine photographer this country has known, and here for the first time a broad selection of his classic yachting images has been put together in a single volume. They range from the mid 1880s through the heydey of mullet boat racing before the First World War and end with images taken just before his retirement in the mid 1920s. Many famous yachts are captured here Ariki, Rainbow, Viking, Moana, Iorangi, and others from the Logan and Bailey yards and many of the images have never been seen in print before. All photographs have been selected from the Auckland Museums remarkable Winkelmann Marine Collection.
Robin Elliott is General Manager of an Auckland freight forwarding company, author of Emmy 70 Years of M Class Yachting, and part owner of the 1947 M Class Matana. Harold Kidd is a senior partner in an Auckland law firm, part owner of two classic yachts and a launch, and with Robin Elliott writes a monthly magazine column on New Zealands yachting history. Rodney Wilson is Executive Director of the Auckland Museum and was formerly Founding Director of the New Zealand National Maritime Museum.
