Energy underpins all our lives. We expect hot water and lighting at the flick of a switch, underestimating the complex series of events that makes these things possible. But there is a vast global network of power stations, gas pipelines, transmission cables, and engineers, quietly working behind the scenes.
In Power Up engineer Yasmin Ali takes us on a deeply personal journey around the world to show us the entire picture, from underwater pipelines being welded together, across acres of solar panels shimmering in the desert, to the colossal ships moving natural gas around the oceans. We discover the raw resources we can harness, how we move energy around the globe, and how we use it in our everyday lives, from the buildings we live in to the food we eat.Power Up captures this critical moment as we transition towards a clean, green future, reminding us that to face the challenges of climate change, we need to understand the energy system from the bottom to the top.Yasmin Ali is a chemical engineer, currently working in green hydrogen project development. She previously worked in coal and gas fired power stations, oil and gas, district heating systems, and energy innovation, transitioning away from fossil fuels into more sustainable energy systems over the course of her career. Yasmin has written about engineering and energy for the BBC and Metro, as well as numerous specialist publications, and has featured in TV and radio programmes for the BBC, Channel 5 and the Smithsonian Channel and has completed a British Science Association Media Fellowship with the BBC's Science Unit. In recognition of her public engagement work, Yasmin has received numerous awards and in 2020 was listed in the Women's Engineering Society's top 50 female engineers in sustainability.
