This book offers a general history of the role of all Australian churches in Australian society, dealing with their roles in the life of the states and the territorities of the Commonwealth. Author of "The Most Godless Place Under Heaven", Breward provides a comprehensive investigation of the major issues, including: how the churches adapted to different geographical and political environments; church-state relations; the churches and education; responses to the stubborn secularity of Australia; the emergence of a distinctive Australian theology; and the extent to which the churches have shaped and been shaped by the Australian ethos. Breward has also published "The Most Godless Place Under Heaven".
Professor Ian Breward teaches history at the United Faculty of Theology in Melbourne and is a senior associate of the History Department at the University of Melbourne. He is the author of The Most Godless Place Under Heaven.
