Description

Chinese Brutalism Today is divided into three chapters and ends with a methodological afterword that explains the reasons why the research was carried out and the scientific tools used. The first chapter is 'Exposed concrete in the design process,' the second is 'Identity Research: Towards an Ornate Surface' and the third is 'Global ambition: towards a polished surface.' The narration takes place through a substantial written part accompanied by specific images that facilitate the understanding of the text. Transversally, in the narrative, an interpretation is given to the precise and ambiguous dictates announced in 2017 by President Xi Jinping: to pursue a contemporary architecture made of "international standards with Chinese characteristics". AUTHOR: Alberto Bologna (Turin, 1982) is an architect, Ph.D. in history of architecture and town planning, currently assistant professor of architecture and urban design at DAD-Department of Architecture and Design at Politecnico di Torino, in Italy. From 2011 to 2015 he has been a post-doc scientist at the Ecole Politechnique Fdrale de Lausanne (EPFL), in Switzerland. He worked as an adjunct professor in the field of architectural design and theory of architecture at Politecnico di Torino, Politecnico di Milano, University of Ferrara and University of Genoa. SELLING POINTS: A critical reading of contemporary Chinese architecture, which contextualises them both in the panorama of Chinese constructions and in that of global architecture The long periods of research and teaching conducted by the author at the Tsinghua University in Beijing have facilitated the establishment of a real cultural exchange between China and the West. The book is therefore addressed both to the academia and to the Chinese and Western professional sphere as well as to companies operating in the construction sector 240 colour images
