Interest in English country house interiors is stronger than ever, and the time is rightfor a beautifully produced new book on the work of Robert Adam, the greatneoclassical architect who influenced generations. Unlike the existing, morescholarly books on the subject, this richly illustrated volume will appeal todesigners and homeowners as well as traditional architecture enthusiasts, promising to become an important decorating reference book.
The definitive book on Robert Adam, with specially commissioned photographyby Paul Barker, new scholarship by esteemed writer Jeremy Musson, and drawingsfrom Sir John Soane's Museum. Adam (1728-1792) is unquestionably one of thegreatest British architects of all time, who stamped his neoclassical aesthetic visionon both country house and town house. His achievement in the field of interiordesign was also exceptional, and in fact, Adam is one of the few architects to lendhis name to an interior style.
"Although Robert Adam was an architect in the 1700s, many of his homes are still aroundand drawing attentioncenturies later. "Adam had from the beginning of his London practice made bold and sumptuous interior effectthe combination of novel architectural experience and refined decorationthe keystone of his invention. The bare ingredients of this he took from his study in Rome, and in the process contributed something new to the growing field of neoclassical design," writes author Jeremy Musson in the new book Robert Adam: Country House Design, Decoration, and the Art of Elegance (Rizzoli, $65). Many of his creations can be found in the English countryside, where his knowledge of color, craftsmanship, and antiquities are on full display."
