Description

Scientific studies show that temperatures in France will rise by +4C by 2100. Its current temperate climate will be transformed into a subtropical one. This book, published for the 3rd biennial of architecture and landscape of le-de-France, looks southwards, to these already warmer climates, to find models for building architecture in northern latitudes today that can withstand this rising heat.

The book begins by thoroughly revisiting pre-air-conditioned architecturefound in warm climates through a detailed scientific analysis of 120 distinctvernacular buildings. This comprehensive analysis uncovers the variousingenious strategies these buildings utilize to remain cool and effectivelyresist both drought and flooding. It then explores the innovative workof approximately forty contemporary architects who are already activelyworking in these increasingly warmer regions to gain a deeper understandingof how their designs successfully manage heat. The book concludes with aseries of thought-provoking essays discussing the future of architecture inthe context of global warming, including the important roles of non-humanentities and technological agents in addressing the pressing challenges facedby the built environment.
