Rare, small, but perfectly formed, examples of this by-way of eighteenth century gardening are now immaculately restored and highly visited, but Painswick Rococo Garden is the most accessible and most feted of them all. In this book the author, champion of rcoco, details the designs, the buildings and the planting; he discusses overlapping styles such as Gothic, chinoiserie and rustic, and the main architects such as Sanderson Miller and Thomas Wright.
Michael Symes is a garden historica based at Birkbeck Collage, London. For many years he has taught garden history to adults in university extra-mural classes and he has published a number of books in addition to specialist articles. He is on the Council of the Garden History Society.
