Retrospecta catalogs activity at the Yale School of Architecture. Each volume is a snapshot of evolving architectural and graphic design trends. The book demarcates events such as lectures, publication releases, and outstanding circumstances that have uniquely impacted the academic, social, and political environment at the school.
Volume 48 covers the activities of the Yale School of Architecture 2024-25 academic year.AbstractFor the 48th iteration of Retrospecta, we, the editors and designers, have decided to tell the story differently. Not through years or course numbers, but through threads. We've gathered the projects into into eight clusters, hoping that, placed beside one another, they might begin to speak. This way of organizing was not about order, but about conversation. We wanted to blur the edges between classes and cohorts, to let ideas drift across timelines and settle where they resonate most. Our hope is that new relationships might appear, unexpected ones, born not from structure, but from shared preoccupations, quiet urgencies, and the wish to make sense of the world together.
At the back of the book, you'll find an index that organizes each project by class and student name, so you can easily locate specific work. This book is about consequences, what it means to place one thing after another, and what it means to undo that sequence. The thickness of the paper, the cover, the space between lines, the pauses we built into the pages, each choice was made with care, not for perfection, but for presence. Each curatorial decision was made to hold a mirror up to the many voices that fill this hall. You may read it beginning to end, or turn to a page at random. However you choose to move through it, we hope something lingers.
