Collector and philanthropist George R. Kravis II has cultivated one ofthe preeminent collections of industrial design. He established the Kravis DesignCenter in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to make his collection available to a wide public. Hewas a communications entrepreneur, forging a career in radio broadcasting, beingone of the youngest people to own a jazz radio show and going on to own anumber of radio stations. George Kravis is brother to Henry Kravis, the billionaireco-founder of Kohlberg, Kravis Roberts, one of the largest private equity firms inthe world. Penny Sparke is a professor in the School of Design and Art History atKingston University London. She has written extensively on historic andcontemporary design.
