Description

A general reference work on Latin American choral music, this research guide catalogues composers and their works from 1550 to the present. It provides bio-bibliographical and stylistic information about composers and detailed information about specific works, including choral and instrumental requirements, and duration and source of information such as publishers, manuscripts, locations and recordings. In addition to the main catalogue, the volume offers a brief history of music in Latin America emphasizing choral music; a guide to research in the field; bibliographies of literature on the subject, of biographies, and of periodicals; and a discography with library holdings. Useful appendices list music publishers and recording companies of Latin American classical music; scholars, research institutions, and schools of music in the United States with a special interest in Latin American music; scholars, research institutions and schools of music in Latin America; and music archives in Latin America. A comprehensive research tool for Latin American choral music, this volume will also serve scholars and researchers as a basic guide to sources for Latin American classical music.

Reviews

.,."a vital reference work that any music library reference section will need."-The American Organist
.,."a well-written, thoroughly researched, and eminently useful guide to Latin American choral music--still a little-known body of choral literature. Those interested in learning more about this repertoire now have a first-rate tool for undertaking the study."-Choral Journal
. . . will help choral directors to locate important repertory, as well as function as starting points for further research in the fields they cover.-Sonneck Society Bulletin

An excellent, well-organized introductory work. Dealing with art music only, Tiemstra includes a catalog of composers and their works (OCLC location symbols provided), anthologies and collections of music, series of music, music publishers (complete addresses are not consistently given), selected discography, recording companies, music archives, biographical bibliography, and periodicals. The latter four categories will be of interest also to those conducting research on topics other than choral music. Notable features are Tiemstra's brief survey of art music in Latin America, a guide to conducting research on Latin American music, and a list of scholars, organizations, and schools that focus on Latin American studies. Too recent for Tiemstra's bibliography is Donald Thompson's bibliography Music and Dance in Puerto Rico from the Age of Columbus to Modern Times (CH, Jun '92). Tiemstra's work may be supplemented by referring to the on-going series Secular Choral Music in Print and Sacred Choral Music in Print. Tiemstra does not include a general index (Note: R. Ceruti's "Missa a cuatro voces" and five works by D. Zipoli are recorded on audio cassette by Coral Nova, Ramiro Soriano, director, in La Paz, Bolivia.)-Choice
Suzanne Spicer Tiemstra, an organist and choir director, has produced a useful guide that will serve as an effective introduction to the area.-Fontes Artis Musicae
