This volume - including dramatic analysis, discussion of vocal and musical aspects and matters of style and tradition, and translations of texts - is an aid to sopranos to perform the operatic arias discussed. Twenty-eight popular and widely studied and performed arias have been chosen. There are descriptions of stage settings, with costume sketches by the theatrical designer Leo Van Witsen. Sections of the arias are discussed in detail and, while the scenic design may change from one production to another, the suggestions given for dramatic motivation, character building and stage movement can be adapted for use in different theatrical environments.
It's difficult to think what more the authors could do to make the singer's task easier....I was impressed by much of the vocal advice offered...the staging side is explained and discussed with commendable clarity. * Opera *
