Description

This collection includes Leonard's classic photographs of the jazz greats: from Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Dexter Gordon to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. His uniquely evocative and cinematic portraits of jazz's most iconic figures in their heyday have gone on to become iconic images in their own right.

This definitive and beautifully produced collection includes Leonard's most famous images as well as a significant number of previously unpublished photographs, and interviews with Herman Leonard by distinguished television producer Leslie Woodhead.

Author Bio

Herman Leonard was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 1923. In 1948, he moved to New York City and opened his first studio in Greenwich Village, where he worked for Life, Esquire, and Playboy while recording the jazz scene in his photographs of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis. In 1989, Leonard settled in New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home and studio in 2005, after which he moved to California. In 2008, Leonard was the recipient of a Lucie award - the photography world's equivalent of the Oscars - for Oustanding Achievement in Portraiture, as well as the Grammy Foundation's first grant award to a photographer. He died in August 2010.
