Reviews

Music scholar and author Carnovale has compiled the first comprehensive English-language bio-bibliography on composer and jazz scholar Schuller. The volume is divided into six main sections: a 32 page biography: a 1985 interview between Schuller and Carnovale; a list of works and performances; a discography all disc format recordings; an annotated bibliography of 73 selected writings by Schuller; and an annotated bibliography of 469 selected writings about Schuller, mostly in English. Also included are four appendixes and an index. Cross-references are plentiful. Entries are occasionally from hard-to-find sources (concert programs, smaller newspapers) and many disks are out of print, but annotations are informative and subjective. Recommended for libraries serving doctoral music candidates and graduate faculty. * Choice *
A comprehensive bibliography on Gunther Schuller is a challenging task, considering the many musical hats he wears. He is one of the most talented and prolific composers of our day, and he has had much to say about the field of music, including jazz, which many consider to be one of America's `best exports'. Norbert Carnovale's unique bio-bibliography aptly reflects Schuller's many facets and is a welcome addition to personal and public libraries throughout the world. * Fontes Artis Musicae *
I can't believe all the information you ferreted out about me. You know much more about me than I do. There are things in there that I have long ago forgotten I have done. Unbelievable! I can't fathom how you discovered, rediscovered all that information. It is an incredible job of research and thoroughness. I am so indebted to you. * Gunther Schuller *
