Made in 1959, North by Northwest is perhaps Alfred Hitchcock's best loved romantic thriller, and certainly one of the most influential works ever made in the genre - an enticing cocktail of suspense, comedy, eroticism and danger. The script is a masterwork of its kind, ingeniously composed by one of the most successful and versatile of American screenwriters, Ernest Lehman (whose other credits include Sweet Smell of Success and The Sound of Music).Roger Thornhill is a suave but stiff-necked Madison Avenue executive, who finds himself mistaken for an agent of US intelligence and dragged into life-threatening escapades. Thornhill's consolation is that he gets to romance an elegant female spy. But the game of international intrigue is played for high stakes, and so, in the movie's classic thrill sequences, Thornhill finds himself being chased across cornfields by a crop-dusting plane and fighting for his life on the slopes of Mount Rushmore's famous presidential monument.
