Description

Beginning with a brief history of the use of sound in the theatre and its development the author then describes different sound systems used in theatre, practical considerations and working in different types of theatre. He discusses the artistic input involved, working with the director and other designers and the production process - putting together cue sheets, desk plots, operating the show and rehearsals. He pays particular attention to musical theatre looking at microphones, piano techs, loudspeaker rigs and operating a musical. In addition there are chapters on sound effects, the recording studio, MIDI and finally a section explaining the physics and maths involved in sound. There is also a bibliography and online reference sources.

Author Bio

John A. Leonard is a theatre and exhibition sound designer working in the UK, Europe and North America. He ran the sound department at the Theatre Royal, Bristol before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1978. There he became the company's first Head of Sound and Associate Artist before forming his own company, Aura Sound Design Ltd, in 1998. Leonard is an Honorary Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He lives in London.
