Roberta Nieman shot the photographs for Magnetic North: Summers with Extraordinary People over a five-year period (197075), summering with this eclectic group of artists gathered on the far Atlantic coast. The original prints were developed in Cape Breton's saltwater, and many were lost over time. The images in Magnetic North are what remain of an idyllic period of blissful isolation.
After living and working in NYC as a photographer and videographer for several artists including Joan Jonas, Richard Serra, and others, Nieman returned to Los Angeles in 1980. She remained there for the next fifteen years, working as an interior architect and designer. In 2005, she resumed her photographic career, and established a new home and studio in Oaxaca, Mexico, where she lived until returning to Los Angeles.
