Skateboarding has historically been a male-dominated world. Jenny Sampson's series, Skater Girls, increases the visibility of and honors the girls and non-binary people who break down this gender wall. Using an historical photographic process, requiring my subjects to remain still, we are left with a unique, haunting beauty and their respectful strength and determination.
Jenny Sampson is a photographer based in Berkeley, CA whose rst book Skaters (Daylight 2017) made waves within the extreme sports community and beyond. Her tintype photographs are in numerous private collections. Becky Beal, PhD, is an associate professor of kinesiology at California State University in Hayward, CA, where she teaches classes in the sociology and phi- losophy of sport. For nearly thirty years she has researched and wri en about the cultural and political dynamics of skateboarding. Cindy Whitehead was one of the rst professional female skateboarders, a Skateboard Hall of Fame Inductee and is now a sports stylist for stars around the world. Her rst book ITS NOT ABOUT PRE Y: A Book About Radical Skater Girls was released in 2017.
