In our current cultural and political moment of anxiety, division, and even hate, we could all use a reminder of the hopeful and positive possibilities of human existence. Joy! is a reimagining of the Chronicle backlist classic All Smiles(1995) collecting the best of the historical black-and-white photos from that book plus a new selection of colour photography. This petite and eminently giftable hardcover showcases the spectrum of a universal human emotion. Gathered by photo curator Bruce Velick and with an introduction by Robert Emmons, PhD, a happiness expert and psychology professor at the University of California, Davis, the images in the book include the work ofacclaimed photographers Leonard Freed, Elliott Erwitt, Linda Connor, Inge Morath, and many more.
"When do we experience the purest of emotions: unfiltered, unfettered happiness A new book of serotonin-soaked photographs has the answer: when running through a wedding day hailstorm, bouncing on a trampoline, rolling a giant snowball or, if you're a nun, attempting to squeeze your wimple into a car, alongside four others. Yes, really." -- Red
"Bruce Velick is a gallery curator and created the new book Joy! as an exhibition of images of life's happiest moments, captured by photographers across the globe from the 1920s to the present. It's an uplifting collection that documents everyday moments you can't help but smile at." -- Psychologies
"Joy! Photographs of Lifes Happiest Moments is a new book that does exactly what it says on the cover: Its a collection of photos capturing moments of pure joy and contentment, curated by author, designer, and gallery director Bruce Velick." -- Metro
