The manufacture of colourfully painted tiles has a longtradition in Persia, modern-day Iran. This publication focuseson so-called 'haft rang' (seven colours) tiles fromthe eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. During this time,the art of making tiles experienced a revival, starting inthe city of Shiraz and initiated primarily by unknown artistswho wanted to preserve and carry on their country'straditions. Their vibrantly coloured tiles, with underglaze,decorated private homes, as well as public and religiousbuildings.
Hadi Seif was born in Shiraz, Iran, in 1948. He is currently a senior researcher of Iranian arts. He also teaches several Iranian popular art courses to post-graduate and doctoral students at the Academy of Arts in Teheran. Over the years, he has published over forty books, mainly related to Persian popular arts, and has also produced several television documentaries on this subject.
