The National Gallery of Australia's recent acquisition of the Tyler archive has added to its collection the work of some of the greatest printmakers of the last sixty years, among them Lichtenstein, Hockney, Stella, Motherwell, Frankenthaler, Johns, Albers and Rauschenberg, all of whom feature in this lavish new NGA catalogue. This book is divided into five sections, each containing an essay of approximately 5000 words on the featured artist (details to come). The tone is interpretive, relating to the exhibition, and also describes biographies and chronologies. In summary, it describes how each artist approaches printmaking. The book is highly illustrated, including 300 images and photographs of the artist at work. The front section includes an introduction to the Tyler collection and its acquisition, a Director's foreword, and acknowledgements.
Jane Kinsman is Senior Curator, International Prints, Drawings and Illustrated Books, at the National Gallery, Australia.
