The arts create shared experiences that move us to laughter or tears; that increase our understanding of other peoples lives, that educate and entertain us. In short, it is the power of enlightenment.
Sir Peter Bazalgette, former Chair of Arts Council England, 201216
Arts and culture make a hugely significant impact, enriching peoples lives in many ways. At a time when funding is frequently under threat, Darren Henley argues for the invaluable rewards to be gained from investment, and that we should not take our rich cultural heritage for granted.
The Arts Dividend Revisited is based on his reflections on Englands arts and culture landscape, and the remarkable creativity displayed across the country. As more and more people are encouraged and inspired to participate, and artistic work flourishes, the book looks in depth at the many benefits the arts can bring: encouraging creativity across all disciplines; advancing education; providing defining characteristics to places; having a positive impact on health and wellbeing; supporting innovation and technology; contributing to economic prosperity; and enhancing Englands reputation for cultural excellence.
Darren Henley is the author of more than thirty books about the arts and two independent government reviews into music education and cultural education. Chief executive of Arts Council England since 2015, he spent fifteen years leading Classic FM, first as managing editor and then as managing director. Appointed OBE for services to music, he is a recipient of the British Academy Presidents Medal for his contribution to music education, music research and the arts.
