The first in a series of books on the museum collections and cultural heritage of Uzbekistan, this title is dedicated to the State Art Museum of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, named after Savitsky.

With examples of applied art and design and the best-known paintings by Alexander Volkov, Robert Falke, Mikhail Kurzin, Nikolay Karakhan, and many others, the Savitsky Museum is one of the most important art museums in Central Asia. Recognised for its collections of Russian and Turkestani avant-garde painting, the museum also features a collection of applied arts and crafts of the autonomous republic of Karakalpakstan and ancient Khwarazm.

Author Bio

Tigran Konstantinovich Mkrtychev was born in 1959 in Tver. While studying at the Tashkent State University, he began working at the Institute of Art History (Tashkent), under the supervision of L.I. Rempel. In 1985, he was hired by the State Museum of the East (Moscow). Here, he went from a senior researcher to the director of the branch - the Museum of the Roerichs. His research interests range from the ancient Buddhist art of Central Asia to contemporary visual arts; he is the author of monographs, albums, scientific and popular articles. Mkrtychev acted as a curator of numerous exhibitions and museum expositions; led various archaeological expeditions; was the organiser of various scientific events, and is an honoured worker of the culture of the Russian Federation.
