A groundbreaking comparison of two contemporary Asian cultures which defines a space for Asian modernity without reference to Europe or the US. Based on John Clark's extensive primary research, Asian Modernities develops theoretical perspectives on genealogies of modernity and the twin phenomena of globalisation and transnational artistic identity. Highly illustrated throughout, this study combines critical examination with close attention to visual material.
John Clark is Professor of Asian Art History at the University of Sydney. He has authored and co-edited five books, including Modern Asian Art and Modernities of Chinese Art. Asian Modernities is part of the four-book series Australian Studies in Art and Art Theory and is published with the assistance of the Getty Foundation and the Nelson Meers Foundation.
