No longer defining themselves by one medium or style, many contemporary artists are creating installations - mixed-media works built around a central concept. Reliant on the artist's use of physical space and often creating a powerful sense of theatre, installations are islands of experience, surrounding the viewer and infusing the senses with sounds, surfaces, colours and odours. The exhibition and publication, "Islands", examines installation work by 12 influential artists, from senior figures such as Joseph Beuys, Christian Boltanski, Annette Messager and Bill Viola, to emerging artists such as Yukinori Yanagi, Richard Wilson and Montien Boonma, whose approaches to art-making are the most vital current to emerge in the 1990s. Illustrating their work alongside pieces included in the exhibition, this book provides a survey of a new, synthetic approach to art-making.
