Friedel Dzubas (1915-1994) was one of the strongest abstract painters of his time. There has for a long time been a need for a serious study of Dzubas's art, one that would be deeply researched, would throw new light on his formative experiences and intermittent crises, would understand his involvement with certain art of the past (in particular the great eighteenth-century master G. B. Tiepolo), be cognizant of the critical literature, and, most important, would give his highly original paintings the close and sustained attention they deserve. Patricia Lewy's Friedel Dzubas: The Size of Life more than fits the bill. Thanks to this important and richly illustrated monograph, Dzubas stands revealed as a figure not just of depth and fascination but also of significant achievement.
Director Patricia L. Lewy, PhD, works under the auspices of the Friedel Dzubas estate.
