Description

The famed Lambert Collection in Avignon owns more than 30 works by American conceptualist Sol LeWitt (1928-2007), that together constitute a concise account of his evolution. This concise, elegantly produced volume documents these works, as well as LeWitt's longstanding relationship with the collection. An interview between Yvon Lambert, the Collection's founder, a selection of illustrations and installation images from a 2018 exhibition of the Lambert Collection's LeWitt holdings provide a summary of this important association for this key figure in postwar American art.

Author Bio

Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) is an American conceptual artist. His works are made of cubes, pyramids, lines and other geometrical forms, deployed by the artist within a clear construction system that is then shared with the viewer. Each line and shape finds its place due to its simplicity and its ability to undermine subjectivity. It is this total, precision approach that has made Sol LeWitt one of the most important artists in his discipline. The Collection Lambert in Avignon was founded in 2000 by Yvon Lambert, seeking to open his personal collection of contemporary art to the public, within the walls of the city mansion known as the Htel de Caumont. This collection of contemporary art reflects the major movements in the art of our times: Minimal art, Conceptual art, Land art, painting from the 1980's, video and photography from the 1990's.The collection holds works from great artists such as: Cy Twombly, Sol LeWitt, Donald Judd, Niele Toroni,Jean-Michel Basquiat, Anselm Kiefer, Christian Boltanski, Nan Goldin,Douglas Gordon and Jenny Holzer
